Interim superintendent contract up for approval tonight
Gilroy – At its biweekly meeting tonight, the Gilroy Unified School District Board of Trustees plans to approve a contract with Darrel Taylor to become the interim superintendent starting March 7.
The contract calls for Taylor to receive $17,000 each month, slightly less than the $19,216 Superintendent Edwin Diaz made each month. Taylor will not be eligible for any of the typical benefits permanent superintendents receive, including health care coverage and an insurance policy. However, he will receive $1,200 per month for housing and relocation expenses and one personal day each month.
The contract is on a month to month basis and will expire 30 days from the appointment of a new superintendent or from the termination by either party. The GUSD board plans to announce their selection for a permanent superintendent May 17.

School district ineligible for funds
Gilroy – While the California Department of Education said $2.9 billion will soon be available for 1,500 schools statewide, Gilroy schools will not see an extra dollar.
The money, part of a settlement between Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the California Teachers Association, is being offered to 1,455 of the state’s poorest performing schools to help reduce class size and fund specific projects over a seven-year period.
Gilroy schools, however, performed at a level that excluded them from applying for the funds.
