Hi, I’m just reading the story about the forestry station out at
Bonfante Gardens.
Bonfante CDF Station

“Hi, I’m just reading the story about the forestry station out at Bonfante Gardens. When Bonfante was given a permit to build, part of the building plans was that a fire station would be built out there and Bonfante would provide that station so they could have fire coverage real close. I guess in the long run it would help their insurance. Now the CDF has to pay rent? I’d like you to find out how much rent they are paying. Is Bonfante Gardens getting a good deal and making money on this? Thank you very much.”

Red Phone:

Caller, this is a great question for Mayor Al Pinheiro, a member of the park’s board of directors who is now re-negotiating the lease with CDF. Pinheiro refused to disclose any rental figures to the Dispatch when we wrote about this a few weeks ago. Perhaps a curious voter will have more luck?

Pothole filled streets

“Hi Red Phone. I’m calling about the street conditions between Sixth and Seventh streets. The potholes have been covered up but the street is still crumbling and in need of repair. I’d like to see if you could contact a supervisor to get involved and maybe the supervisor could come out and see exactly what I’m talking about. The situation is like somebody going into the emergency room with a broken leg and the doctor putting a bandage on the situation instead of a cast. It actually looks like that section between Sixth and Seventh needs to be repaved completely. I’d appreciate it if you could look into this for me. Thank you.”

Red Phone:

Caller, unfortunately, Red Phone is a bit in the dark on this one. Sixth and Seventh streets run clear across the heart of the city. Can you narrow it down for us and say which connector streets you’re concerned about? Eigleberry? Monterey? Alexander?

Is school on schedule?

“Hey Red Phone, I understand that the new elementary school that is to replace Las Animas is supposed to be ready to open Fall 2007 (moved back from Fall 2006) but I haven’t seen any construction. It’s only about a year and a half away and my daughter is scheduled to start kindergarten there.

When is ground breaking scheduled to begin?”

Red Phone:

Caller, yes the new elementary school is still scheduled to open in the fall of 2007, said District Superintendent Edwin Diaz.

“We’re already into the construction phase,” he said.

You may not have noticed any changes since the construction that’s in progress includes land preparation such as soil grading but if you drive by the plot (it’s at the dead-end heading west on Luchessa Avenue) you may notice some activity.

The district is still entangled in an eminent domain case over the land and will meet in court next school year. In December the court will set a price for the land.

Do you have a comment, complaint or compliment about an issue that affects Gilroy and its residents? Perhaps you’d like to suggest a turn signal at a troubled intersection? Or maybe offer up a compliment for a good job done by city workers? Just let the Red Phone know. But remember to leave a name and number when you call or e-mail. The Red Phone won’t publish this information – it will only be used if verification is necessary. Contact the Red Phone at 842-9070 or e-mail
