Why that name?

Hello Red Phone. I’m a first time caller but a frequent reader.

Why that name?

“Hello Red Phone. I’m a first time caller but a frequent reader. Saturday’s (4/22) paper, leaves me with a question. Coast Range Brewery, there’s a picture, and the person is painting Farmhouse Brewing Company on the side of the building at Monterey and 10th. So is it a name change? I thought the place had closed down because the site is so overrun with weeds and such. I’d like to see it stay open and perhaps come up with a more welcoming entrance. Thank you.”

Red Phone:

Caller, have you been hitting the bottle again? Just kidding, we were stumped too. Turns out that Coast Range Inc. is the parent company and the brand name of their product is Farmhouse Brewing Company, according to manager Jeff Moses. That’s why both names appear on their brewery at the corner of 10th and Monterey streets. In case you’re wondering, the company makes farmhouse-style ales and pilsners.

The public can stop by for tastings or to buy beer all week except Sunday. Call 846-1000 to learn more.

And remember, good caller, there’s no such thing as a stupid question – especially when it gets Dispatch staff and readers invited for free beer.

Biking laws

“Hey Red Phone. We’ve had hundreds of cyclists enjoying our spring days in the middle of roads, even on Santa Teresa when there’s an adequate bike lane. I’d like to know what the law is and if they can be ticketed for riding two and three abreast because they create a dangerous situation for motorists. Thanks.”

Red Phone:

“If they are riding in the middle of the road, obstructing traffic, they can be ticketed,” said Gilroy Police Sgt. John Sheedy. “Most areas have bike lanes to ride in – otherwise they ride with the direction of traffic, but they are supposed to ride close to the shoulder not in the middle of the road.”

Sheedy recommends that even if riding with little traffic not to ride two abreast – even in bike lanes. If someone hits a rock or gets caught on the handle bars of another rider, they could end up in the middle of the road.

More on immigration

“I saw on the news recently about students down in LA somewhere who took down the U.S. flag at their school and then put up the Mexico flag. After that, they ran up the American flag – upside down. To come here … you know, even if you come here illegally, which is wrong, make the effort to assimilate. Learn English. Don’t make me try to fit you. If I moved anywhere else on this entire planet, I’d be expected to assimilate. I’d have to learn the language and have to attempt to fit in. I think that’s probably a problem for a lot of people out there, that these illegal immigrant don’t even make an effort. If they did, I’d bet money there wouldn’t be such an uproar. Thanks Red Phone.”
