Move over, Dad. Make way, Grandma.
For at least one day a week, the kids are coming to a golf course near you.
From 2 to 4 every Sunday afternoon, the Eagle Ridge Golf Club shuts down its driving range and converts the land into a five-hole, mini-golf course for children ages 12 and under.
This Sunday, the kids are invited to play two rounds at the club’s first-ever Christmas Mini-Course Tournament. A shotgun start will take place at 2pm and the participants will be grouped by age.
The holes are numbered, parents act as caddies and the kids have their own personal scorecards. Six-year-old Ryan Slater holds the five-hole course record of 16.
The idea for the mini-course, which has been played by a child as young as 2, came to fruition in August.
“The kids were coming to lessons and getting taught the game,” Eagle Ridge instructor Barbara Wind said, “but there was nowhere for them to play. Here they get a real chance to experience golf.”
Director of instruction Scott Krause, the mastermind behind the concept, said weekly attendance went from three to 24 in less than a month. In fact, the PGA got word of the idea and recently featured the mini-course in its monthly magazine.
“The bottom line is these kids are getting to play a game they normally couldn’t play for awhile,” Krause said. “That’s what it’s all about.”
For those interested in playing in the tournament, today is the last day to RSVP at (408) 846-4531. The entry fee is $5 and Eagle Ridge provides the balls, tees and the equipment.
