Gilroy – Clint Wheeler is excited. The Gilroy head baseball coach says he’s got “the deepest pitching staff I’ve ever had.”
The Mustangs return five starters, including TCAL first-team left fielder Marty Sustaita and three-year varsity catcher Chris Hernandez. Gilroy has four pitchers Wheeler says he’d feel confident handing the ball to on any given day.
And in this very young preseason, the team has already outlasted Valley Christian 10-8 in 14 scrimmage innings.
The real games start today. Watsonville will be at GHS at 3:30pm. “We beat them last year, 15-14,” said Wheeler. “We were pretty young then and so were they. We’re both older now.”
