SANTA CLARA – The Jammer’s 12-and-under club boys basketball team took second place in the competitive Beyond the Arc Tournament at Mission College this past weekend.
Despite losing their first game of the tournament on Saturday, the Jammers – made up of players from Morgan Hill and Gilroy – came out in their next two games with the energy and speed to record back-to-back victories. Breaking open their games against Los Gatos and Portola Valley with strong trapping defense and buckets in transition on offense, the Jammers limited easy shots while scoring 60 percent of their points in both games through fast breaks. Point guards Jaeshawn Hoenck, Ken Torres and Nate Schilling combined to lead the team’s successful play in transition, coach Scott Aldridge said.
The Jammers’ Dillon Day led the tournament in scoring with 15 points per game. He also had a team-high 10 rebounds per contest. Torres averaged eight points and 2.5 assists per game and TJ Cox and Hector Perez both averaged seven points.
Hoenck contributed 2.5 assists per game and Kamron Dehpanah led the team with 1.5 steals per contest.
The Jammers’ 13-and-under team also ended a weekend of play in strong fashion, beating a squad from San Mateo 41-29 after losing their first two games on Saturday.
“The team really bounced back with one of the best-played games we have played all year,” Aldridge said, adding that almost everyone on the team scored to help contribute to the win.
“We broke their press and were able to get a lot of fast break points. We played a very stubborn zone defense and forced the San Mateo team to take long shots.”
Evan Shipiro Lopez led the team with 9.2 points, 6.5 Rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Kelon Jacobs averaged 7.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest, Trevor Hadnot pitched in 5.7 points and 1.6 assists per game, and Zach Fishler snared 3.5 rebounds per game while also handing out an average of two assists over the course of the tournament.
Aldridge lauded his squads’ passing, which led to fast break points and easy baskets underneath, as well as the defensive play of Ryan Rupp, Nick Giordano and Timmy Girvin.
Both Jammers squads will now be preparing for an upcoming tournament in Sacramento.
