GHS baseball win one, lose two
GILROY – After a poor showing in Saturday morning’s 6-5 home loss to Pioneer, the Mustang diamondmen were given a stern talking to by skipper Clint Wheeler before heading over to Santa Teresa for a second game that same day.

“We didn’t play too well in the first game. It was our worst game all year and we still barely lost that game,” Wheeler said. “We talked a little bit and I tried to give them some motivation for the next game and they came out ready to play in the second game.”

Gilroy (4-2 overall) clobbered host Santa Teresa by a 17-7 spread, scoring 12 runs in the opening two innings.

“They definitely responded, and it was everybody,” Wheeler said. “Everybody contributed.”

The Mustangs quickly returned to their home diamond Monday, dropping a 10-3 decision to Leigh for their second loss in the Blossom Hill Tournament that knocked them out of contention.

“Today, we just didn’t throw too many strikes,” Wheeler said. “We had trouble finding the plate. We walked the lead-off batter six of seven innings and I think they scored every time.”

In Saturday’s opening loss to Pioneer, junior starter Armando Franco took the loss, giving up only one earned run in five innings pitched.

“He pitched very well,” said Wheeler of Franco. “We threw the ball around a little bit and misplayed some balls in the outfield that didn’t show up as errors. We didn’t help out too much, offensively.”

The Mustangs trailed 6-3 going into the last inning when they scored two runs to cut the gap to one before their rally prematurely ended.

“We just sat around all day,” Wheeler said. “We didn’t do much that first game.”

Later that day, Gilroy got its bats going and jumped all over Santa Teresa with five runs in the first inning and seven more in the second inning. Santa Teresa’s ace was knocked out in the first frame.

“We swing the bat pretty well,” Wheeler said. “Everybody chipped in.”

Junior pitcher Anthony Lucio got the win, going five strong innings before reliever Carlos Garcia finished up the game.

At the plate, junior outfielder Marty Sustaita knocked in three runs with two doubles and a triple, while teammates Mark Gonzalez and Drew Anderson both doubled.

In Monday’s loss to Leigh, junior right-hander Peter Mickartz struggled with his control, going four innings and giving up seven runs.

“He struggled,” said Wheeler of Mickartz, who left with the bases loaded and Gilroy trailing 5-2. “When he threw strikes, he was great, but he struggled to be consistent with his stuff.”

Franco pitched one inning in relief and then Jeff MacPhail finished off the game.

Gilroy will play a non-league game Monday against Alisal at home before Wednesday’s league opener against Salinas on March 10.
