DEAR EDITOR:

I enjoyed Sports Editor Scott Forstner’s article on Jeff Garcia. My father forwarded it to me. I, too, grew up with Jeff in Gilroy and played football with him as his wide receiver in Jeff’s junior year.

I now live in Bellevue, Washington but have continued to follow Jeff’s career. We go to the NFL games when they play the Seahawks and, of course, pick up the games on TV. Jeff is an outstanding individual. I see him about every two years or so at a wedding of a mutual friend, or when we both had the privilege of being in the High School Hall of Fame together. He continues to be the same unselfish committed guy that we grew up with. My family continues to have periodic have contact with Jeff and his family and they are always gracious.

To illustrate what type of guy Jeff is, on a flight to Seattle from San Jose, I recognized some familiar faces. It happened to be his parents, Bobby and Linda, along with some of my high school friends’ parents.

We started to talk and they informed me they were going to Vancouver to watch Jeff play in the Canadian Football League. Jeff was already a big star in Canada at this point and they assured me that Jeff would love to have us come and watch his game.

They said they would give Jeff my number and he would call and arrange tickets. I took this with a grain of salt, understandably thinking he would be to busy to worry about tickets for an old teammate. I was wrong.

He not only called but continued to call on game day to make sure he could get it organized. He was able arrange for tickets. I knew that he was extremely busy preparing for the game but he took the time to take care of a friend. When I have seen Jeff get bombarded with autograph seekers – mostly they are kids – he has been nothing but accommodating. I think that it would be easy for him to get a big head from all his success, but from what I have seen he will always be the hardworking overachieving nice guy that I have had the pleasure to know.
