GILROY – Gilroy High’s record-setting quarterback Jamie Jensen has decided to attend and play football at City College of San Francisco in the fall.
After receiving walk-on offers from San Jose State and Brigham Young University, Jensen felt the Rams were his best option.
“The coaches, the surrounding cast – it was just a good fit,” Jensen said.
“There’s a possibility of getting in there for one year and getting out. It’s kind of up to me and how I perform.”
The CCSF Rams went 7-4 last season, and, according to the school’s Web site, placed 37 players onto four-year schools during the span of 2003-04. The team most recently won a national championship in 2007.
“I got a few offers for walk-ons and what not, where I could have gone there and earned my scholarship, but I think this is a good route, too,” Jensen said.
Last season Jensen threw for 3,210 yards, 29 touchdowns and 17 interceptions while leading GHS to a 9-2 record and second straight appearance in the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs. The team lost in the first round to Serra 45-14. In his junior year, his first as a starter, Jensen totaled 4,323 yards passing, 41 touchdowns to 20 interceptions and the Mustangs made their first-ever CCS championship game appearance, ending with a 10-3 record and 46-35 loss to Oak Grove in the final.
In just two seasons, Jensen owns virtually every GHS passing record.
The signal-caller, who will be joining the Rams next week for throwing and playbook sessions with the CCSF coaching staff, said he will be competing with Darius Bell for the starting quarterback job. Bell, a 2008 graduate of Riordan, is transferring to CCSF after initially signing with Montana State out of high school. In his senior year at Riordan, Bell led the Crusaders to their first-ever CCS championship, accumulating 2,737 yards passing with 25 touchdowns. He also ran for 714 yards and seven touchdowns.
CCSF head coach George Rush and offensive coordinator Dan Hayes started recruiting Jensen earlier this year after it seemed like Jensen might not be offered a scholarship. The style of offense should suit Jensen’s skill set.
“They run a spread, pro-style (offense),” Jensen said. “They mix it up a little bit.”
Jensen said he will move to San Francisco while attending the school.
CCSF, which plays is in the Coast Conference North, shares the same nickname as Gilroy’s only junior college, Gavilan, which plays in the CC South.
