Jerome “Jerry” Kuehling passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at age 90.
He was the husband of the late Ruth Kuehling (1997). He was the father of Paul Kuehling of Gilroy and brother of the late Zepherine Kipp.
Jerome was born and raised in Gilroy. He graduated from Gilroy High School in 1932. He joined the California National Guard in December 1932 and served three years. His first full-time job was with Almaden Vineyard, San Jose (1933). After his marriage to Ruth Olave in 1934, they rented a house and lived in Hollister. They leased 30 acres on Pacheco Pass in 1934 and started farming. They purchased a house and lot in Gilroy for $7,500 and moved there in 1946. Both Jerome and his late wife, Ruth, went to floral arranging school and opened a flower shop, called Pavilion of Flowers, in Gilroy in January 1949. Jerome was a drum major for the Eagles band, sponsored by the Eagles Lodge of Gilroy in 1949. He was a two-year director of the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce from 1951-1952. He joined the Gilroy Elks Lodge in 1951 and worked his way up to being Exalted Ruler in 1955. After closing the flower shop in 1965, he obtained his Landscaping Contractors License in 1969. He worked until he retired in 1987. He was a member of St. Mary Church, Gilroy.
Visitation will begin Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy, and then proceed to Our Lady’s Chapel, St. Mary’s Church for Mass at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.
