Joseph “Joey/Joe” Hermon Dexter, 22, died Friday, July 16, 2004, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
Mr. Dexter, known as “Joey” or “Joe” and the youngest of four children, was born to Steve and Kathy Dexter on July 14, 1982, in Gilroy. He spent the first 10 years of his life in the country setting he loved, where he, his brothers and sister enjoyed many adventures.
Mr. Dexter attended San Ysidro, Glen View, and Brownell elementary schools. He was the fourth generation of Dexters to attend the school.
In July of 1992, the family moved to Idaho Falls. In Aug. 2002, Mr. Dexter was diagnosed with Metastic Ewing’s Sarcoma. He endured many treatments of chemotherapy, three major surgeries, a stem cell transplant and irradiation.
He is survived by parents, Steve and Kathy Dexter of Idaho Falls; Godparents, Garry and Karen Gose (Jennifer Gose-Ells, Stephanie Scholfield, and CJ Gose); sister, Heather Fairbanks (Ray) of Sacramento; brothers, David (fiancee, Kelly Robertson) and Jeff Dexter of Idaho Falls; paternal grandmother, Mary Dexter of Gilroy; paternal great-grandmother, Ava Hooks of San Jose; aunts, Dorothy Dexter of Elko, Nev., Debbie Hatton (Bert) of Honolulu, Hawaii, Donna Kline (Joe) of Gilroy, Doreen Arucan (Rick) of Manteca, and Diane Fitch of Phoenix, Ariz.; uncles, George Perkins (JoAnn) of Florida, and Pat Perkins (Diane) of California; Mariah Fairbanks of Sacramento; nephews, Jacob, Jordan and Jarret Dexter; 15 cousins; best friend Kevin Larsen and numerous close and special friends.
He was preceded in death by great-grandfather, Hermon Hooks; paternal grandfather, Donald Dexter; grandmother, Virginia Filler; and friend, Andrew Nelson.
Funeral services were held July 24, at the Chapel of Calvary Chapel Church. Cremation and a family ceremony will be held at Fielding Cemetery later in the week.
