Gilroy’s junior varsity baseball team broke out even this week, losing Tuesday night’s game to Evergreen High School, then coming back for the win on Wednesday against Lincoln High.

Sophomore Lance Motch started on the mound for the Mustangs on Tuesday, hoping for a big win. The squad had reason for high hopes when three of their sluggers (Josh Brendle, Jacob Gonzales and Josh Carter) hit doubles in the course of the game. Yet even the Mustangs 10-run showing was not enough as they lost 11-10.

Despite the loss, the boys kept their heads high the next night against Lincoln High School, winning 8-2. Starting pitcher Gonzales and reliever Nathan Kassel were strong on the mound. Brendle, Gonzales and Carter rose to the occasion again, all banging out doubles.

The freshmen are anticipating a solid season.

“I think our kids are going to do great this year,” said coach Allen Dinsmore. “We’re ready to go and have been practicing really hard.”

The Mustangs junior varsity softball team had a big week, playing a total of four games.

Last Friday the girls opened against Watsonville in a preseason game. Freshman pitcher Alyssa Castro took the win as the Mustangs finished on top 13-7.

On Tuesday, they lost 9-2 to Archbishop Mitty. Despite runs scored by Alyssa Castro and Kristy Pineda, sophomore pitcher Sarah Cornaggia could not stop the hard-hitting Monarchs from scoring in every inning except the third and sixth.

Despite this loss, the squad came back strong on Wednesday evening against Pioneer. Alyssa Castro held the defensive side of the game and only allowed four runs while Ashley Gamboa was the big hitter with a triple in the first and a double in the sixth. The Mustangs also got big hits in the first as Diana Carter tripled and Sarah Cornaggia doubled.
