The new season of sports has brought early mixed success to the Gilroy High School teams.

The Mustangs boys JV volleyball team kicked off its season with an easy win over Sobrato, 25-18, 25-15.

“It was a good match,” said co-coach Karie Gonzales. “For being such a young team, they did well.”

The boys also made it two straight wins Thursday when the Mustangs defeated Soquel 25-18, 9-25, 15-5.

“They could’ve played a better (second) game but they won,” Gonzales said.

The JV boys baseball team opened with two wins and one loss. The Mustangs shut out host Watsonville 17-0 in their opener. Their next two games were played against Mountain View. The first one was a heartbreaking 18-15 loss, but the Mustangs fought back Thursday when they hosted Mountain View in Gilroy and won 15-4.

The junior varsity swim team had wins over both Sobrato and Overfelt on Wednesday. Weilan Cui won the 100 breaststroke, Sarah McGeehan won the 100 backstroke and Janae Lance won the 50 freestyle.

“This is probably one of my most enjoyable teams,” said varsity coach Tom Clark. “They’re a great bunch of kids.”

The girls JV softball came up big in its opener Thursday, riding the one-hit pitching of Sarah Cornaggia to a 15-0 win over Valley Christian. Diana Carter hit a triple off the center-field fence and Emily Castro had two hits to lead the Mustangs.
