GILROY – Gilroy’s varsity girls track and field team was the only one of four Mustang squads competing in a Tri-County Athletic League dual with Notre Dame and Palma to emerge victorious Thursday at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.

Surpassing the Spirits 94-42, the Lady Mustangs received excellent performances in a range of events.

Sarah Unadia set a new school record for Gilroy with a time of 15.74 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, while fellow runners Chelsea Kalata (100 meters), Savannah Silacci (400), Athena Alarcon (800), Elise Ogle (1,600) and Kathleen Miller (3,200) all took first in their respective events.

GHS’ Sarina Sandoval and Kim Johnson won the shot put and discus, respectively, and Lindsey Foster (long jump), Julianne Leong (triple Jump) and Samantha Irwin (pole vault) dominated the other field events. Unadia also won the high jump.

Gilroy’s boys’ side came one first-place showing short of stealing their dual against Palma, falling by a score of 71-64.

“I was really proud of how our guys competed to the last event with Palma,” Gilroy coach Jeff Myers said. “We got pretty close to beating them, but came up a few points short.

“We did not take first in many events, but the guys fought for every second and third place in every event.”

Peter Guenther took first place in the 110 high hurdles, 300 intermediate hurdles and 100-meter dash, while Jourdan Soures cleared 5-feet, 8-inches to capture the high jump crown. Juan Velasquez had another solid day, taking second in the 1,600 and 800, just behind Palma’s Tyre Johnson, who is considered one of the top distance runners in the Central Coast Section.

Guenther competed in an additional event this past weekend, setting personal records in the 110 HH and 300 IH with times of 14.74 and 39.06 seconds, respectively, at the St. Francis Invitational.

Along with Guenther, the Mustangs will be represented by a strong cast at the prestigious Arcadia Invite later this season. Other Mustangs to qualify include Alarcon in the 800, Miller in the 3,200 and Unadia in the high jump.
