Dear Editor:
In (brief) response to Mr. Mark Zappa’s latest diatribe against our union and its members:
I have challenged Wal-Mart to let its employees vote on union representation without the kind of pressure and intimidation that has made it the most sued company in American history. To do so would be simply to respect the constitutional rights of these employees as upheld by the Supreme Court. For the real picture of life inside Wal-Mart-and a perspective on why Ms. Hill has not answered my proposal – I suggest Mr. Zappa and others read the letter by Ms. Robasciottti published in these pages earlier this week.
2) Gilroy First!, for the umpteenth time, was formed by individual Gilroy residents, who proudly published their names for all to see. Clandestine? I don’t think so. Did the union support them? Sure. We like the idea of 1,000 new registered voters. We like the idea of reminding the people of Gilroy to get out and vote. Don’t you?
I will not dignify Mr. Zappa’s personal assaults myself and on the members of Local 428 by responding to them.
I will instead leave it to the residents of Gilroy – who are graciously and skillfully served every day by our members at local supermarkets – to come to their own conclusions as to who is “lecherous, caustic, shady, dishonest, thuggish” etc., etc. As for Mr. Zappa, I suggest he make use of the nearest mirror.
