Get the facts from the firefighters; City Council endangering public

Dear Editor,

Starting on Sunday, Nov. 1, the City of Gilroy’s third and newest fire station, Sunrise Fire Station, will be closed. These actions will be the decision of your elected City Council based on “fiscal responsibility.”

Local 2805 “Gilroy Firefighters Association” has acknowledged the city’s actions but does not agree with them! Please visit our web site www.gilroyfirefighters.org to get the facts!

Local 2805’s concerns are for our citizens’ public safety and ours as firefighters providing it to you!

Yes cities are going through tough fiscal times, no doubt. But, a city that is already understaffed can’t afford to jeopardize the safety of it’s citizens and the firefighters providing the service.

Already, Local 2805 members have been out in force going door to door to let the citizens know their safety will be jeopardized by the City Council’s actions. Local 2805, also will be available around the Sunrise Station the days the City Council continues closing Sunrise Station to make the citizens aware of the closure and to answer any questions.

Local 2805, the Gilroy Firefighters Association, is making you aware! The city wasn’t going to say a word! Please get the facts and demand that the City Council makes public safety a priority!

Mark Ordaz, vice president Local 2805,

Gilroy Firefighters Association

Suggestion for VTA bus efficiency – hubs and branches at key spots

Dear Editor,

I applaud Joe Thompson for not only his latest (Oct. 29) letter but all of his previous writings concerning the money pit known as Valley Transportation Authority (formerly known as Santa Claus County Transit) and public transportation as a whole.

Said bus system has been repeatedly rated the least efficient in the country (riders funding only about 15 percent and the rest paid for by county taxpayers).

Clearly at least one of the following must be true:

n Not enough people use it to make it worthwhile.

n They don’t charge riders enough.

n Their people are overpaid.

The county’s continued, token efforts to (pretend to) reform this pathetic agency (i.e. avoid overhaul) may have finally failed. If they don’t want to abolish it altogether, why not offer long and short routes? For example, have express hubs near freeways in Campbell, E. Capitol at U.S. 101, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Gatos, Milpitas, Morgan Hill, Mt. View, Santa Clara, Santa Teresa, Willow Glen at 87 and have branch routes surrounding those hubs.

Doesn’t understand the brownout closures of Sunrise Fire Station

Dear Editor,

Why is Sunrise Fire Station closing?

My dollars are supporting a school we did not even need, and now the City Council has decided to close essential services down? I am very sad about this.

Great tour of Saint Louise Hospital, a modern facility with a caring staff

Dear Editor,

Recently, our small homeschool group was treated to a fantastic tour of Saint Louise Regional Hospital. While there we visited the state-of-the-art wound care center, radiology, and the cafeteria.

Our gracious tour guides, Gail and Gary, also led us out to the CalStar helicopter pad where we met the nurses and pilot who stand by for emergencies. The kids were then welcomed to climb in for a look see!

As a final treat, Dick introduced us to Margie the therapy dog who allowed all the kids to pet her and then gave us a demonstration of her obedience skills!

We were left with the assurance that Saint Louise is a great, modern facility staffed with caring and capable people – paid and volunteer. If you have any doubt drop by for a tour yourself!
