Great Job by the QB from Gilroy – Entertaining and Gutsy Leadership Efforts
Dear Editor,
If the question is, “Has Jeff Garcia provided exciting entertainment and given fans from San Jose, Canada and the NFL their money’s worth,” then the answer is yes. Even with his three all-star awards he has been underappreciated and severely underrated as the exciting and “exceptional” quarterback he is.
The so-called experts consistently have denied him his due because he doesn’t fit some “ideal” physical model, but he is as smart as any quarterback playing today. With the possible exception of Tom Brady, which quarterback played better and more exciting football last weekend, Rex Grossman, Phillip Rivers? Surrounded by supportive and intelligent coaches and a good organization, he makes things happen with an exceptional attitude and intelligence. Congratulations, Jeff.

Considering War, the Draft and What it Really Means to Be a Republican
Dear Editor,
The fantastic (Jan. 10) letter by Scott Glasspool, concerning the SS (Selective Service – great pun!) “readiness exercises'” needs a follow-up.
The draft, much like property tax and declarations of war, is a relic; the Vietnam War gives clear proof thereof. Non-elites (a term that reaches far beyond measures of monetary wealth) were forced to fight a war, run by politicians, that they were not allowed to win. It hurt the military and hurt our country.
Conscription is necessary in only one circumstance: When America declares war on a country that has done so to us.
If any other cause is so great as to need our military be sent abroad, then there will be enough volunteers who believe in it. If there aren’t enough to volunteer, then guess what: We shouldn’t be there!
That is why I urge all Americans (and legal residents): If the fascists (mostly Democrats, by the way – they’re the ones proposing this) start a draft without a declaration of war, and you do not support the cause, REFUSE TO GO!
Don’t put the military down or diss the soldiers as did our brothers in the ’60s; the politicians are sending you, not the armed forces. Don’t desert and go abroad; just as those who, admirably, support the cause will volunteer to fight, stand for what you believe is right as well! Think about it: There is so little prison space, they are releasing violent offenders early. They don’t have the resources!
And to the local fetid hypocrite, Daniel Garcia (also Jan. 10), the Hugo Chavez of Gilroy, I ask: Does this Republican (me), who is proud to have voted for the best president since Theodore Roosevelt, sound like he “likes war?”
