Dear Editor:

If “the eyes are the windows to the soul,” then frequent letters to the editor must be the back door to the writer’s personality.

After years of reading Mr. Zappa’s views, I wonder if he believes that free speech is a right or a privilege, where the privileged few have the right.

There is also a clear need for him to redefine his definition of the words racial and racist, because he used the wrong metaphor when he alleges that, “I believe the racists on these pages are those who continue to slander me because of my political beliefs. My philosophy has nothing to do with race, bigotry or ignorance”.

In my opinion, in Mr. Zappa’s remarks were not just some red herring and that, just by some off chance he does believe his own words, then he is faced with a paradox, making his own anti-liberal political views a racist view point, which is bigotry either way and his failure to understand this makes him appear … a bit foolish.

The unfounded allegation that he is being slandered by racists is a sad commentary. Mr. Zappa has never been “libeled” by anyone on these pages. If there has been any injury to his reputation or his character, it comes from his own bursts.

There is one other item on a personal note that must be addressed “Mr. Williams … goes to great lengths to impress readers with his superior command of all things.” There is no need to be coy, back in my day, we called people like me “know-it-alls.”

Fact is, I know very little. The only difference is I’m a freethinking skeptic, so I must test what I’m told or read, to determine the degree of truth, as well as the facts. That requires that I research it, analyze it, and test it. So when I make a statement, it is not to emphasize a “superior command of all things,” but to emphasize the point that an opinion is not always a fact.
