Lady Mustang field hockey tops Monterey, Carmel
GILROY – The Lady Mustang stickhandlers notched wins over Monterey on Tuesday and Carmel on Thursday to improve their preseason record to 4-1 in the early going.

Gilroy won a tight 2-1 decision on the road in Monterey as forward Selida Banuelas and center Amanda Cooper accounted for the two goals. Banuelas redirected a shot from teammate Shante Mancera for a first-half goal off a free hit. Cooper gave the Lady Mustangs a two-goal lead in the second half with a score off an assist via freshman Erin Magill. Monterey broke goaltender Sam Sicard’s shutout bid by scoring with only five minutes to go.

Senior wing Tracey Link tallied a natural hat trick with three straight goals in Gilroy’s 6-0 thrashing of Carmel at home. After senior teammate Maday Garcia opened the scoring, Link scored one in the first half from Maday and Crystal Quintanar, and then two successive to start the second half – getting assists from Banuelas and Mancera.

The scoring frenzy continued with sophomore Karlie Sandoval finding the back of the net off her own rebound and then Quintanar – who was assisted by Morgan Morales.

CPR CERTIFICATION: The Gilroy High field hockey team’s fundraising efforts to finance a trip to the National Field Hockey Festival in Palm Springs, Florida stars with Tuesday’s CPR Certification Course.

A certified trainer from the Gilroy Fire Department will run the class – which costs $25 per person. The two-hour class will be held at Gilroy High at 7 p.m.

To sign up, call Erin Gemar at 848-7177 or just show up on Tuesday.
