An early lead helped the Dodgers outlast the Cubs 4-3 this Saturday in Little League play in the boys’ Majors National League division.

The Dodgers scored two of their four runs in the first inning and relied on solid defense and pitching from Michael Hartman and Joseph Lara for the rest of the game to pull out the win.

The Dodgers (9-6) were led by Hartman (2 hits, 1 RBI), Travis Franco (2 hits, 2 RBI, stolen base) and Dalton Campbell (2 hits, 1 RBI).

In the first inning, Campbell drove in Franco for the first run of the game. Campbell then stole home for the second run of the inning.

The Dodgers struck again in the third inning. Franco drove in Joe Lampkin Jr, who walked to get on base and then stole second and third. In the top of the fifth, Campbell scored on a Hartman base hit.

On the mound, Hartman had five strikeouts and allowed four hits in three innings. Lara struck out seven and allowed just one hit.

The Cubs (6-9) made a run at the Dodger lead in the fourth inning when Angel Gamboa (double) was driven in by pitcher Danny Valdez’s RBI triple.

Cubs coach Chris Fritter said Valdez, along with Nathan Davis, had strong pitching performances.
