SALINAS – Facing its toughest challenge of the season so far, Gilroy High’s girls tennis team proved to be one player stronger than Alvarez on Tuesday, defeating the Eagles on their own court 4-3.
No. 2 singles player Monica Liu sealed the victory for the Mustangs in the final match of the day, taking a third-set tiebreaker over Gaby Quintero 10-4 after losing the first set 6-3 and winning the second set 6-4.
“If she wins, we win. If she loses, we lose,” Gilroy coach Jami Reynolds said. “She stepped up and played the great tennis we all believed she could.”
After losing No. 1 singles player Meha Munshi earlier in the week to an injury in practice, the Mustangs had to adjust their lineup. Emily Castro filled Munshi’s role as Gilroy’s top player, beating Charlene Speer 6-3, 6-4.
“We had to move all our singles up a position and they all stepped up and pulled out the win,” Reynolds said.
Gilroy is now 2-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League. The team’s next match will at home Thursday at 4 p.m. against Notre Dame.
