GILROY – Two local art programs recently received a combined $5,077 from the Arts Council Silicon Valley through the Community Arts Fund (CAF).

The Theatre Angels Art League received $2,451.64, and the South Valley Youth Symphony received $2,625.86.

“We are so pleased to once again receive a grant from the Arts Council Silicon Valley,” said Bill Flodberg, fund development manager for South Valley Youth Organization, which umbrellas both grant recipients. “This time, we received almost as much as we asked for, and we’re very grateful for that.”

The grant for Theatre Angels Art League will help alleviate costs of the South Valley Symphony Youth and Family Concert, scheduled for February at Gavilan College. The grant for South Valley Youth Symphony will help alleviate rehearsal costs as orchestra members prepare for their annual December concert.

ACSV this year awarded a total of $388,768 to cultural and arts organizations throughout Santa Clara County, a 25-percent increase in the average grant award as well as in the total amount awarded.

A three-year, $750,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation also helped boost the total award.

The CAF, one type of grant, assists with project support for smaller, volunteer-driven organizations with annual budgets between $6,000 and $100,000. Such groups can apply for awards up to $3,000. This year, ACSV awarded 62 CAF grants.

The second type of grant, the Organizational Enhancement Fund, or OEF, awards grants for general operating purposes for professional and semi-professional groups with annual budgets between $100,000 and $2 million. OEF awards range from $5,000 to $10,000. This year, ACSV awarded 44 OEF grants.

Organizations applying for grants first must submit applications that are screened and reviewed by ACSV staff. A panel of community members then makes recommendations to the Arts Council Board of Trustees, and grants are awarded in July.

Launched in 1983, the ACSV has distributed $7 million to local arts and cultural organizations over the past 12 years.
