NarAnon needs a place to meet in South County

– NarAnon, the 12 step fellowship for family and friends of
drugs addicts is seeking a meeting place. They would like Tuesday
evening, as the area of San Jose/Los Gatos has a meeting every
night except Tuesday, so South County hosting a Tuesday meeting
would be of great value and benefit.
NarAnon needs a place to meet in South County

Gilroy – NarAnon, the 12 step fellowship for family and friends of drugs addicts is seeking a meeting place. They would like Tuesday evening, as the area of San Jose/Los Gatos has a meeting every night except Tuesday, so South County hosting a Tuesday meeting would be of great value and benefit. The woman who is coordinating this effort has several people on a waiting list for a South County meeting.

As members will pay for the meeting room, the lower the cost, the easier on wallets. The meetings are one hour.

The facility could be in Gilroy, San Martin or Morgan Hill.

‘Songs for a New World’

Gilroy – The Odyssey Theatre Company of Gilroy High School Presents “Songs for a New World” Thursday, at 7:30pm; and Friday and Saturday, at 8pm at the Gilroy High School Theatre, 750 W. 10th St.

Gavilan College Alumni Mixer

Gilroy – Former Gavilan and San Benito Junior colleges students and staff members are invited to attend an Alumni Mixer on Friday, from 6 to 8pm in the adaptive physical education building at Gavilan College located at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

Alumni will receive free admission to two basketball games taking place that evening. Women’s basketball will begin at 5:30pm, with the Gavilan Rams pitted against the College of San Mateo. Men’s basketball will begin at 7:30pm, they will play Hartnell College.

Enjoy a winter waterfowl paddle

Gilroy – Bring your kayak or canoe for a peaceful morning paddle on the waters of Coyote Lake in search of winter waterfowl beginning at 9am Saturday. A snack will be provided. There is a $5 per vehicle park entrance fee, but the program is free. Meet at the Coyote Lake launch area, 10840 Coyote Lake Road.

A winter festival of fun

Gilroy – The Las Animas Winter Festival will be held Friday, Jan. 27 from 5:30 to 8pm in Rod Kelley’s multipurpose room. $1 Raffle tickets for S.F. Giants, Bonfante Gardens, I & Out Burger, Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, Opera San Jose, Paramount’s Great America, The Tech Museum of San Jose, Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, Ross Dress for Less, Music for a Song, Johnny Carino’s and lots more.

If you bring five box tops, you will receive a free raffle ticket. If you’d like to donate a prize, bring it to the office.

‘Wonderland Live!’

Gilroy – Community Services & John Bisceglie Present “Wonderland Live!” – a fast-paced musical parody featuring a non-stop score of funky hits from the ’60s and ’70s and features more than 70 local kids. Held Feb. 3 through 19. Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm. Sunday matinees at 2pm. Performing at the Gilroy High School Theater. Tickets are $11.

Changes in service

Gilroy – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority will hold a public meeting Friday, Feb. 3, at 2pm, to discuss proposed changes to the agency’s paratransit services for the elderly and disabled. Major changes include an easier application process and the opportunity for phone rather than in-person interviews. The meeting will be held at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St.

Annual Speech Contest

Gilroy – The Gilroy Rotary Club will be conducting its annual Speech Contest Feb. 7, at the Gilroy Elk’s Lodge. The contest is open to any student in grades ninth through 12 who attend Gilroy High School or who is a resident of Gilroy and attends a private high school. There are four levels of competition, with the conclusion being held at the Santa Clara Marriott April 30.

The theme for the speech is “Service Above Self – Because We Care.” Each student may chose any topic he or she feels is of interest, as long as the content of the speech relates to the theme and incorporates at least one of the principles of the 4-Way Test. Our goal, as Rotarians, is to recognize and support young people who are tomorrow’s leaders.

Democratic Club meets

Morgan Hill – The South County Democratic Club invites residents to meet the Democratic Candidates for Congressional District 11, representing Morgan Hill and the area east of Gilroy, at their regular meeting at 10am Saturday. All declared candidates are expected to attend. The meeting will be held at the home of Alex and Yarka Kennett, 15231 Perry Lane, Morgan Hill. Open to the public.
