Gilroy – The Gilroy High School Parent Club is staging a Candidates’ Forum on Sept. 27 at 7:30pm in the high school library. A five minute per candidate introduction period will be followed by an hour long question and answer period. The questions will be posed by the audience.

Cub Scout recruitment night

Audubon Society Meeting
Gilroy – The Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society and the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club will hold an environmental conservation meeting from 7:30 to 9pm Wednesday. The meeting will take place in the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna St., and will focus on the Pajaro River Watershed.

Lecture on our energy future
Gilroy – Democratic candidate Jerry McNerney, who is competing against Congressman Richard Pombo, R-Tracy, will discuss America’s energy future at 7:30pm Thursday.
McNerney has a doctorate in math from the University of New Mexico and worked in national security for several years as a contractor at the Sandia National Laboratories on Kirtland Air Force Base. In 1985, he accepted a senior engineering position with US Windpower and in 1994 he started working as an energy consultant for PG&E, FloWind, The Electric Power Research Institute and other utility companies. McNerney is now the chief executive officer of a start-up company that intends to manufacture wind turbines.
The event will take place in the Art Lecture Hall at Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. The lecture is part of the Associated Student Body’s voter education program.
Event benefits Gilroy Foundation
Gilroy – The Gilroy Foundation is hosting its annual fundraiser “A Day In The Country” at Fortino Winery Saturday, Sept. 30 at 5pm. The evening begins with hors d’oeuvres, wine tasting and a silent auction, with music provided by “Open Invitation.” Dinner and a live auction conducted by Sean O’Callaghan, Bay Area radio and television personality will follow. All proceeds benefit The Gilroy Foundation, a community organization that serves the needs of local nonprofits through yearly grants. The Gilroy Foundation was established in 1980 to help meet the growing needs of our community in the areas of health, education, recreation, culture and civic services.
Fortino Winery is located at 4525 Pacheco Pass Highway in Gilroy. Tickets for the event are $100 per person and may be purchased by calling 408-842-3727.

Practice skills at Bicycle Rodeo
Gilroy – Join the Gilroy Police Department’s bicycle patrol officers, the California Highway Patrol and the Gilroy Fire Department for the annual Bicycle Rodeo, from 11am to 2pm Saturday, Sept. 30.
Children of all ages can bring their bicycles and complete the “Safe Moves City” safety course, that includes the correct method of crossing intersections, railroad crossings, and what to do near school buses and emergency vehicles, and many other skills related to bicycle safety. There also will be free license registration and bicycle inspection
The day includes free hot dogs and drinks to all participants.
The event takes place at Eliot Elementary School, 475 Old Gilroy St., corner of Chestnut and E. Seventh Street.
Gavilan Health Fair coming Oct. 4
Gilroy – Gavilan College is staging its annual health fair from 9am to 1pm Oct. 4 in the Student Center. The free event, open to the entire community, will provide blood pressure screening and glucose testing for diabetes and an opportunity to become a member of National Marrow Registry.
The Health Fair regularly draws more than 1,500 visitors. This year’s Health Fair will focus on fitness and wellness, with information on how people can take care of themselves physically and emotionally.
