Gilroy man dies when motorcycle crashes into SUV

Gilroy – A 39-year-old Gilroy man was killed after his motorcycle drove head on into a Land Cruiser on Davidson Avenue south of Bloomfield Avenue. The man’s name is not being released until family members have been contacted. About 6:30pm Friday he was driving southbound when he drove into Lester Bettencourt Jr.’s truck. He did not have any lighting equipment on his 1987 Suzuki motorcycle. The 24-year-old from West Point, Calif. swerved to avoid the man, but it was too late. Bettencourt ran off the road, crashing into a fence. The 39-year-old was killed on impact. The crash is under investigation by California Highway Patrol officers. Alcohol was not a factor.

GUSD students return from winter break Monday, Jan. 2

Gilroy – School district students and staff begin their winter break Monday and return to school on Jan. 2.

Santa Claus is coming to San Ysidro Park to meet kids

Gilroy – Santa is coming to San Ysidro Park Wednesday from 2 to 5pm. Goodie bags will be given out to the first 400. Meet Santa in the recreation room (Murray and Chestnut streets), weather permitting.

GHS choir stages Winter Concert Wednesday

Gilroy – The Gilroy High School choir will stage it s Winter Concert Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30pm at the GHS Theater. Doors open at 7pm.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at GHS or at box office before the show. The box office will open at 6:30pm. Tickets are $5. The performance will include both Christmas and winter songs.

At the culmination of the event alumni will be invited onto the stage to sing “Carol of the Bells” and Handel’s Messiah.

ConAgra Foods’ Gilroy plant give $5K to Pine Ridge

Gilroy – ConAgra Foods’ Gilroy plant donated $5,000 to the Pine Ridge Association.

The plant originally received the $5,000 from ConAgra Foods in recognition of its participation in the company’s Sustainable Development program.

The plant donated its award money to the Pine Ridge Association because of its outstanding work in supporting and promoting Henry Coe State Park. The ConAgra Foods Sustainable Development program encourages plants to protect the environment while running a profitable business more efficiently and with less waste.

The geminids are coming

Gilroy – Join the Coyote-Bear Park staff for one of the best meteor showers in the heavens – the geminids. Tonight, starting at 11pm in the Coyote Lake Launch Area, viewers will see up to 60 “shooting stars” per hour at the shower’s midnight peak. You’ll also get an opportunity to see Saturn, the moon and other heavenly bodies through the park’s 10-inch telescope. Hot cocoa and cookies will be provided. Bring a flashlight, binoculars, warm clothing and an outdoor chair. The event is free. A $5 per vehicle entrance fee is charged.
