Price rises after latest GUSD appraisal

Gilroy – The school district has reappraised a nearly nine-acre parcel of land, acquired from Glen Loma Group, at $7.6 million.

The figure is higher than any previous GUSD offer for the land, the site of a new elementary school, and could be fodder for a new settlement offer, before the dispute goes to trial Tuesday. GUSD is at odds with Glen Loma Group, the developer of a 360-acre mini-city in southwest Gilroy, over the price of the land, sold to Glen Loma in 2002 and reclaimed via eminent domain last fall.

School officials will review the new appraisal at a closed-session meeting today.

Students learn life lessons while giving

Gilroy – Megan Anders and Gennifer Giusiana, Gilroy students who attend Monte Vista Christian School in Watsonville, are experiencing the joy of giving by participating in the Angel Tree Christmas program this year. They and their classmates have donated brightly wrapped gifts which will be delivered to children whose parents are in prison.

Janelle Glaum, a high school Bible teacher at Monte Vista, has helped her students get involved with Angel Tree for four years.

“This is a wonderful way to let prisoners connect with their children,” she said. “The parent identifies which gift the child would like to receive, and when it’s delivered by volunteers, it’s done in the name of the mother or father.”

Giusiana said she enjoyed selecting a gift for the child whose name she had chosen. “My friends and I are excited about making this a special Christmas for the kids.”

“This is a great way for us to show we care about people who are sometimes forgotten,” said Anders.

Glaum noted that her students had gone beyond her expectations.

“Many of them brought in more than one gift. I think this project has been as much a blessing for our students who gave the gifts as it will be for the children who receive them.”
