San Jose – Gilroy resident Jane Howard was named vice president of the Santa Clara County Board of Education for 2007 on Wednesday. Gary Rummelhoff, who was vice president of the board last year, was elected president of the board.

Howard, who was elected in November to retain her seat, is the executive director of Gilroy Visitors Bureau. She has served on the county board’s Budget Study Committee, Joint Committee on Child Care and the Regional Occupational Program-South Committee.

Rummelhoff, who was vice president of the board in 2006, is vice president of operations and chief financial officer at United Way Silicon Valley. The board is comprised of seven members and holds regular meeting on the first and third Wednesday of the month. For more information, visit www.sccoe.org.

Enjoy historic Gilroy with note cards

Festive new features at Bonfante Gardens

Gilroy – Bonfante Gardens Holiday Lights features two new additions this year: a festive “Home for the Holidays” parade and special appearances by Snoopy, the lovable beagle from PEANUTS comic strips.

Holiday Lights includes millions of dazzling lights around the park, an all-you-can-eat holiday feast, ice skating under the stars, holiday themed rides and visits with Santa.

The new parade begins at 8:30pm on weekends. The event continues Fridays through Sundays through Dec. 10, daily Dec. 15 to 23. Park is open nightly from 4 to 9pm. Tickets range from $22 to $40.

Time to register for Gavilan College classes

Gilroy – New and continuing students can now register for winter intersession and spring semester classes at Gavilan College. Thanks to a statewide fee reduction, classes are only $20 per unit.

There are three ways to register:

n Online at www.gavilan.edu, click on “OLGA” (OnLine Gavilan Access). Online registration operates Mon. through Fri. from 8am to 10pm In addition to registering, OLGA lets you add and drop classes, check your class schedule and total fees, select a Credit/No-Credit option for a class, check prior semester’s grades, find open sections, purchase parking permits and student ID cards, check class prerequisites, and obtain an unofficial transcript. You can pay fees online using Mastercard or VISA. For help using OLGA, call (408) 848-4733.

n By phone at 846-3729, Mon. through Fri. 9am to 10pm. Both checks and credit cards may be used for phone registration. Before calling, make sure you have your Social Security number or student ID number and section numbers for your classes.

Learn about the future of agriculture

Morgan Hill – The Santa Clara County Farm Bureau’s Young Farmers and Ranchers have been newly organized and will hold their inaugural meeting at 5:30pm today at the Trail Dust Restaurant, located at 17240 Monterey Road.

Santa Clara County boasts great diversity and innovation in its agriculture sector. This organization will provide young people the chance to get involved, said Tim Chiala, founder and chairman of the Santa Clara County Young Farmers and Ranchers.

The meeting will feature guest speaker Joe Zanger of Casa De Fruta.

Membership is free and anyone interested in the agriculture industry is welcome to attend.

A free barbecue dinner will be served.
