Mount Madonna School awarded garden grant

Watsonville – A $250 support grant from Home Depot was given for the Children’s Garden at Mount Madonna School.

Elementary Science Teacher Diane Sampson applied and was awarded the grant, in the category of “Best Plan, Spring 2006,” in the nationwide competition sponsored by Home Depot and the Viva! Garden for Schools Program.

Sampson said she used the funds to purchase three, two-wheeled garden carts and six small-sized shovels for student use.

“I noticed that wheelbarrows are more difficult for kids to balance and transport,” Sampson explained. “With the new garden carts, even the first grade children are having fun adding compost to the fruit trees in the Children’s Garden.”
