Annual Toys for Tots Drive kicks off

Gilroy – The Gilroy Elks RV Group, The Garlic Roamers, are conducting their annual toy drive.

Citizens of Gilroy and Morgan Hill are encouraged to contribute an unwrapped toy. Please drop off all toys at the Elks Lodge no later than Dec. 7.

Festival accepting 2007 poster entries

Gilroy – The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association, Inc. is accepting entries for the 2007 Art Poster Contest.

A $750 first prize will go to the entry which is judged to best capture the spirit and essence of this premier food festival.

In addition, the first place winner shall receive ten posters and one of each souvenir item produced with their artwork. The second place winner will receive $400 and third place $200. The winning entry will be reproduced as a high quality, limited edition poster to be sold at the 29th Annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, July 27, 28 and 29, 2007.

Join historic walking tour

ICF scholarship breakfast

Gilroy – Branch 28 of the Italian Catholic Federation presents its semiannual scholarship breakfast, Nov. 5.

Breakfast of scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee will be served from 7:30 to 11:30am in Cullen Hall at St. Mary’s Parish.

All proceeds benefit scholarship programs and other ICF charities. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Donation $5 adults and $3 children younger than 12.

Thanksgiving treats for the troops

Gilroy – Help send carefully packaged treats with a hug from home. The Operation Interdependence Community Event Packaging of Thanksgiving day treats for troops is 2 to 5pm, Nov. 5, 8075 Camino Arroyo.

Operation Interdependence sends packages along with letters to a platoon of 50 troops, no one is left out and everyone counts. Donations of snack size jerky, sunflower seeds, assorted nuts and more are welcome.

Bible study at Lutheran Church

Gilroy – Advent Lutheran Church invites everyone to the Mid Week Bible Study at Advent Lutheran Church, classroom # 9, beginning Nov. 6, 10 to 11:30am. A five session study will discuss: death, eternal life and Heaven.

Each class is a stand alone topical study. There is no fee to attend and the study guides are supplied free. Just bring yourself, a friend and your bible.

Slender Lady holds St. Jude fundraiser

Gilroy – Slender Lady of Gilroy staff and members will host a “Work-Out for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital” Monday through Wednesday. The community is invited to participate, you do not need to be a member to help. Give us a call to choose your event, then get your friends and family to sponsor your work-out. Schedule of events are: Monday: “Hula-Hooping for St. Jude,” Tuesday: “Band-Walking for St. Jude” and Wednesday: “Circuit for Cents.”

Can’t work-out with us then help us out by “Kick’in Back at The Claddagh” for lunch or dinner Wednesday or “Hang Heavy at Chevy’s” from 3 to 9pm Thursday. These businesses are giving a percent of ticket sales back to St. Jude on those dates and during those hours. You must have their flyer in order for St. Jude to get the donation. Meet the university reps at Transfer Day

Gilroy – The Gavilan College/Transfer Center is sponsoring Transfer Day, 10am to 1pm, Nov. 9.

This event will bring more than 40 coll ege and university representatives to Gavilan College Student Center for a huge college fair to provide students, staff and the community with information on transferring to baccalaureate granting institutions.

Current and prospective college students are invited to take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn about numerous options for higher education. Admission is free, campus parking is 75 cents for the day.
