Gilroy’s reigning Garlic Queen will crown the successor who
proves herself worthy at the 30th annual Garlic Queen Pageant from
2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Gavilan College Theater. Nine girls will
showcase their charm, composure and wit while demonstrating their
love for the aromatic bulb in a competition for the throne and
numerous scholarships, said Alannah Radtke, co-chair of the Garlic
Queen committee. The winner will represent her town when traveling
to Gilroy’s garlicky sister city
– Takko-Machi, Japan – and at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.
The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Runners up will
receive scholarships of $500 and $250. The contestants also have a
shot at various others: the Founding Fathers, Past Presidents,
Rotary and Past Queen scholarships. Tickets are $10.

Guitar music from Spain comes to Gavilan
Gavilan College presents Guitar Music of Spain, featuring Albert “Ajito” Marques and Corey Whitehead.
Their only performance takes place at 7:30 p.m. today in the theater at Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. The cost is $10; student and senior tickets are $5.

Seniors, time to swing in the moonlight
The Senior Ball, “Swingin’ in the Moonlight … ” event will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St. This grand event will include dancing and music by “South Bay Swing Band,” bingo from 5 to 6 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m., dancing from 7 to 9 p.m., plus crowning of a King & Queen of the dance.! Tickets are $5 at the Gilroy Senior Center and will be on sale through Wednesday, May 14.
This event is being sponsored by the Gilroy Youth Commission to Build Community Through Generations.

Gav choir presents Spring Concert
The Gavilan College Concert Choir presents their Spring Concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The performance will be in Morgan Hill at Advent Lutheran Church, 16870 Murphy Ave.
The Gilroy High School Chamber Singers will join the Gavilan Choir in performing “Requiem.”
Both choirs are under the direction of Phillip Robb. There is no admission charge, and all are invited.
Committee members needed
The city of Gilroy is accepting applications for two vacancies on its Housing Advisory Committee. Vacancies to be filled are for a Gilroy renter and local building industry representative. Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. May 21.
The committee is an advisory board tasked with reviewing housing policies and programs and making recommendations to city council. Appointed members serve a two year term running through June 30, 2010. The committee meets regularly on the second Wednesday of each month for two hours.
