Big Sur – Five local women marathoners headed to Big Sur this past Sunday to do the Big Sur International Marathon – in a way they’d never run a marathon before.

Divided up the effort and running the race as a relay, the women – running as a team called “Marathon Maniacs” – proudly represented Gilroy by taking first place in the Open Women’s Division. Barb Voss, Alison Williams, Kari Bertrand, Kelly Ramirez and Joan Miller combined their efforts and beat out of 45 other teams in the race.

It was an extra sweet victory for Voss and Miller as they had just returned from doing the Boston Marathon six days prior to this event. Both women struggled with the heat in Boston and consequently had very disappointing race times. Coming back strong after a short reprieve demonstrated their running strength and was heartening, Voss and Miller said.

The women said they enjoyed the camaraderie and fun in Big Sur, as well as an incredible atmosphere which included whale watching and listening to numerous live bands along the race course.

They will celebrate their victory with a Magnum of Blackstone Merlot they were presented with at the awards ceremony.
