CALLER 1: This isn’t a beef so I don’t know if it will ever be printed, but I wanted to tell you that I’m calling to give a word of appreciation to an honest man, Don DeLorenzo, the golf pro and manager at Gilroy Golf Course. Many weeks prior to Thanksgiving, I booked a Turkey Day family tournament and sent in a $250 deposit for the 24-player group. I reminded my husband that he had the $250 credit but he forgot. He paid the full fee for his portion of the golfers and I never asked him if he used the credit. The money would have been lost except a few weeks ago, I opened my mail to find a note from Don. He explained that the staff did not remember to apply the deposit check so he was returning it to me uncashed. I called Don, I expressed my appreciation at this found money, knowing it easily could have been diverted into other pockets. But he was very humble and said it was simply the right way to do business. I just thought your readers should know that not everyone who golfs cheats. Thank you.

GREEN PHONE: Thanks for sharing your story with the Green Phone, Caller 1. And kudos to Don DeLorenzo for doing the right thing. Here’s hoping more golfers follow his honest lead.

CALLER 2: Seems like every year I have to call you and remind you about the boys’ volleyball team in Gilroy. I think it’s more important than re-hashing Barry Bonds or Tagliabue or any of the rest of the stuff we hear from every other source. I’d like to get the local news. I’d like to get news about the kids that are doing what they’re doing. I think it’s at least equally important as boys’ golf, which seems to get more play. So why don’t you folks spend a little energy on the volleyball team, which happens to be an extraordinarily good team this year. Bye.

GREEN PHONE: Hello, Caller 2. We’re fully aware the GHS boys’ volleyball season is in full swing, which is why in roughly the past two weeks we’ve dedicated some form of coverage to the team in five different issues of the Dispatch (March 9, 15,18, 22 and 25). This has been very proportional to how we’ve treated many of the other high school sports. Also, keep in mind the team has only had one home game so far, to which the Dispatch sent a reporter. In the second half of the TCAL season, the team will have more home games and we’ll be able to cover many more of those in person. Thanks for letting us know what coverage matters to you.
