First of three new parks officially opens Saturday
Gilroy – The Los Arroyos neighborhood will celebrate the opening of a much-anticipated park this weekend with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and family barbecue.
Residents and city officials will gather at Los Arroyos Neighborhood Park, at Hirasaki Drive and Martiri Court, at 10am Saturday for the official unveiling, followed by a day of food, music, face painting and raffles.
The two and a half acre park includes a children’s playground, two basketball half courts and plenty of green space dotted with picnic tables.
Judy Hess, founder of the Los Arroyos Neighborhood Alliance, has often called the park the heart of the community.
“The alliance is made of five individual neighborhoods,” she said. “We’ve got incomes of all levels, people of all backgrounds, but we all care about family and community. The park is central to that. The park is the unifying factor.”
The weekend event represents the first of many regular gatherings residents hope to hold at Los Arroyos Park. Hess said the alliance also has plans for movie and music nights, Christmas festivities and various programs sponsored by the city’s parks and recreation department.
Los Arroyos is the first of three parks opening in northwest Gilroy in coming weeks.
By the beginning of November, officials also plan to unveil the three-acre Carriage Hills Park, at Crest Hill Way and Valley Oaks Drive, as well as the eight-acre Sunrise Park, at Hogan Way and Saddler Drive.
