Gilroy – Police arrested a 38-year-old San Martin man Friday on suspicion of sexually abusing a 14-year-old Gilroy girl since she was seven or eight years old.

Victor Rangel Tellez, of 13365 Lincoln Ave., could be charged with three felonies: aggravated sexual assault, sexual abuse of a child and rape.

Police took Tellez into custody at the Gilroy Police Department about 2pm Friday, after which he was booked into county jail in San Jose. His arraignment is not yet scheduled.

The arrest took place six days after the start of an investigation by Detective Mitch Madruga into the alleged abuse.

“(Tellez) told family members about it,” Madruga said, and those family members then notified police. Police also have been conducting interviews with the alleged victim.

Tellez went to the 7370 Rosanna St. station on his own on Saturday, Feb. 26. When he arrived, he was visibly emotional and unstable, police said.

“He came into the PD emotionally upset, a little irrational and he was telling the officer he wanted the police to use their guns to kill him because he needed to confess his sins and he’s done bad things,” said Sgt. Kurt Svardal.

On Friday, police asked Tellez to return to the station for questioning, Madruga said.

Although Tellez is a San Martin resident, Gilroy police are conducting the investigation because the abuse allegedly occurred in Gilroy.

At this point in the investigation, the number of instances of abuse is unknown, Madruga said.

“It’s hard to say, only because its been going on for so long – it’s probably been going on for a six-, seven-year period, and it’s really not clear how often she spent (time) with him,” he said.
