Javier Vargas, 54, plowed his Ford F-I50 truck into a power pole on Leavesley Road Sunday night, survived despite flipping the vehicle, then was arrested for driving under the influence, according to California Highway Patrol.
A witnesses at the scene, Tim Avila, 32, reported that a a large crowd of people gathered near the crash. One man took a crowbar and smashed the passenger side window to try to check on the driver’s condition, but the driver was unresponsive. The truck’s ignition was still on and Hispanic music was playing loudly from the truck’s radio so it was difficult to know if the driver could hear.

The CHP reported that when fire personnel arrived they extricated Vargas from his truck, and a Calstar Air Ambulance helicopter transported him to San Jose Regional Medical Center.
He was released from San Jose Regional after being treated for major injuries and booked at Santa Clara County Jail on a misdemeanor DUI charge, according to CHP Officer Erica Elias. No other vehicles or people were involved in the crash.
