Gilroy – A 24-year-old man was shot on Westwood Drive, and survived, police said. But his injury prevented him from speaking to police, who now have only vague descriptions of the two armed men seen fleeing the scene.

Neighbors described a rapid rat-tat-tat of gunshots just before 9:30pm Monday on the 7800 block of Westwood Drive between Redwood Lane and Cypress Court. The victim suffered a single gunshot wound. Bloodstains on the street led to a nearby home. When police arrived, they found three cars damaged by gunshots. The victim and the suspects were gone.

Shortly afterward, a California Highway Patrol officer stopped a vehicle rolling through a red light at the intersection of Leavesley Road and Forest Street, and found the victim being driven by a witness to the hospital. The officer immediately began providing first aid, and called for an ambulance.

As of 4pm Tuesday, the victim was still being treated at an area hospital, said Gilroy Police Sgt. Jim Gillio. His wound isn’t life-threatening. Police are not releasing further information about his injuries, Gillio explained.

Police blocked off the street between Redwood Lane and Cypress Court, neighbors said, and didn’t leave the crime scene until 5am.

“I thought, someone must be hurt,” said a neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous.

The motive for the shooting is unknown, said Gillio, but investigators hope to obtain more clues when the victim can be interviewed.

Anyone with information on the case may call Detective Stan Devlin at 846-0335, or leave an anonymous tip at 846-0330.
