May Day is a richly historic holiday in which various countries around the world celebrate the arrival of spring in spirited customs and traditions.
Gilroy’s event won’t be as boisterous as what happens in St. Andrews in Scotland, where some reports say university students go skinny dipping in the North Sea early the morning of May 1 – but it’s shaping up to be a lively, family-oriented gathering.
A May Day Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Gilroy Demonstration Garden located on Eigleberry Street between Sixth and Seventh streets.
“It will be everything health and gardening related,” said Demonstration Garden Director Judy Hess. “Health and garden, mind, body, spirit.”
Currently, Hess is getting ready for the future Gilroy Farmers’ Market debuting June 5 on Monterey and Seventh streets. She’s working in conjunction with The city’s newly appointed Gilroy Farmers’ Market Manager Catalina Ventura, as well as Leadership Gilroy, which will help jump start the inaugural event.
“Judy and I are really committed to nonchemical food and recruiting organic vendors,” said Ventura.
May Day will be something of a cheery prequel to the farmers’ market, featuring a maypole, face painting, live music, artists, painters, photographers and jewelry maker. Additional vendors will include Uvas Gold Apiary honey from Hecker Pass, local, organic fruit products from Van Dyke Ranch, organic cookies and coffee, native plants for sale, therapy herbs and end-of-winter harvest produce from the Demonstration Garden. Personnel from the City of Gilroy will be provide information on fire safety.
People and Planet – a fair trade and gluten free store located at 15750 Vineyard Blvd., Suite 170 in Morgan Hill – will also be on hand.
“I might bring some green home products – compost buckets, bio-bags, compost starters, just some of the nonfood type items that we sell,” said owner Mike Monroe.
The garden’s next event is a cooking demonstration scheduled for May 14.
For those interested in getting their hands dirty, meeting new people and eating good food, the garden holds Saturday Potluck Workdays every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. including an organic farm stand.
