Dear Editor,
Democrats know that evidence, polls and studies are showing that Medicare reform is starting to work and nothing could be worse for Sen. John Kerry’s campaign.
A study by the Kaiser Family Foundation confirms that the new Medicare prescription drug discount card program can save seniors 17-24 percent on their medicines, with savings as high as 30 percent when they buy their prescriptions from a licensed online domestic pharmacy.
Also, 25 percent of the lowest-income cardholders have qualified for a $600 annual credit that can be used to cover remaining prescription costs, further reducing their out-of-pocket expenses.
Despite critics’ complaints, signing up for the card is easy. Seniors can get a breakdown of the cards available where they live, what drugs each card will cover, and which discounts are available.
Though dozens of cards may be offered in a state, only a few may be good options for a given senior, so the clear side-by-side comparison they get will empower seniors to choose the card that will save them the most on the drugs they use.
It’s a huge step in the right direction. Democrats may be trying to get seniors to punish the program’s backers at the ballot box by misrepresenting the program’s benefits, but seniors will ultimately decide for themselves what course of action is right. President Bush’s adversaries may be in for a surprise on Election Day.
