GHS softball commits seven errors in 7-1 loss
SALINAS – The Lady Mustang softball squad caved in with a season-high seven errors Tuesday, leading to an uneventful 7-1 road loss to North Salinas.

“Very uncharacteristic of us, and it wasn’t just one person either. We spread it around,” said head coach Julie Berggren of her team’s fielding follies.

Freshman hurler Patricia Olvera allowed only one earned run on seven hits to go along with seven strike outs in her second straight start in replace of ailing pitcher Sarah Villar.

Olvera also got the Lady Mustangs on the board early with an RBI base hit in the top of the first inning after second baseman Yolanda Esquivel singled and shortstop Kayla Aldridge reached on an error.

“We started hot. We were hitting the ball hard,” Berggren said. “We hit the ball really hard today in the first two innings, but (North Salinas pitcher) Jessie Boyle calmed down and we started to make a few errors.”

Following the one-run first, Gilroy managed only three more singles by Russhelle Preeshl, Amanda Tellez and Erin Magill through the final six innings.

Meanwhile, the Lady Vikings scored four runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead, as Gilroy helped them out with four errors in the field. North Salinas added two runs in the fourth on five hits and an error, as well as one run in the sixth.

Gilroy, which will not qualify for the CCS Playoffs for the first time in seven seasons, will close out its season with Thursday’s home game against neighboring rival Live Oak at 4 p.m.

“We’ve got a huge game against Live Oak on Thursday. It’s senior day for Bria (DeLorenzo) and manager Sarah Miller, and I think the girls are pretty pumped up,” Berggren said. “We can play spoiler to Live Oak and I think that will motivate the girls more. They really want to win for Bria.”
