A Morgan Hill resident and his horse died in a traffic collision while riding on Hale Avenue Saturday, police said.

Allen “Skip” Haughay, Jr., 48 of Morgan Hill, was riding his horse on Hale Avenue, just south of Kalana Avenue in north Morgan Hill, when they were struck by a 2004 GMC pickup, California Highway Patrol officer Jaime Rios said.

The pickup was traveling north on Hale Avenue, and the impact threw Haughay from his horse into a parked Ford Pickup on the east shoulder of the road, police said.

Haughay was flown by helicopter to Valley Medical Center with major head injuries, Rios said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Haughay was riding his horse to a party at a friend’s house and had just reached their destination when the collision happened, Rios said.

Police do not know if the horse and Haughay moved into the roadway just before the collision, or if they had been standing still in the roadway for a few moments before the accident occurred.

“The cause of the accident is still under investigation,” said Rios, adding that neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the accident.

The driver of the pickup, Blaine Beck, 58 of San Jose, and his 60-year-old female passenger were not injured in the accident, Rios said. Beck was not cited or arrested.

Haughay was a software engineer working for Apple, which he called “the dream job of a lifetime,” according to his Mac profile page. His passion were his horses, he wrote.

“When I am not working, I spend most of my free time at the barn riding, training, and taking care of my three horses,” it says in Haughay’s “About Me” section of the webpage. His other hobbies included amateur film making, music, movies, snowboarding, sailing, working out, scuba-diving and travel, he wrote.

There are many photos of Haughay riding horses on the webpage that’s been visited 5,763 times. The site was last updated in 2008.
