GILROY – A Morgam Hill woman remains in fair condition Tuesday after her Mercedes sedan flipped end-over-end four or five times on southbound U.S. 101 Sunday afternoon.
California Highway Patrol officers aren’t yet sure what caused th accident.
Driver Joan Lombardi, 65, suffered a broken sternum and a cut hand in the wreck, according to CHP spokesman Brad Voyles. An air ambulance flew her to San Jose Medical Center.
Lombardi’s car went off 101 about a mile south of state Highway 25.
Traffic was backed up in both directions as a result of the crash.
An hour and 20 minutes later, a four-vehicle accident took place on the opposite, northbound side of 101 about a mile south of Lombardi’s wreck.
Traffic there was at a standstill, the CHP reported. Ron Prakash, 25, of Seaside, failed to stop his Ford van in time to avoid a collision as he approached the stopped cars at 1:24 p.m.
Three passengers, all from Salinas, had minor injuries as a result of the accident, Voyles said.
Ambulances carried a 14-year-old boy, 39-year-old Martina Reyes and 30-year-old Blanca Santos to Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy.
No information was available about the boy, but the adults were treated and released, according to hospital officials.
Prakesh’s van rear-ended a Toyota coupe driven by 18-year-old Manuel Reyes Jr., of Salinas.
The van pushed the Toyota into a Nissan sedan, which in turn hit a Lexus.
Rojelio Reyes, 39, of Salinas, was driving the Nissan. Dante Gallinetti, 72, of Mountain View, was driving the Lexus.
Martina Reyes and the 14-year-old injured boy were passengers in the Toyota, Voyles said. Santos was a passenger in the Nissan.
The CHP has found Prakesh at fault in the accident, but no charges have been filed.
