After Day 1 of the 32nd annual Mid Cals, the double-elimination tournament looks to be headed to a wild Day 2 and finals Saturday night. Host Gilroy High has a narrow lead on defending champion Selma at the conclusion of Friday’s all-day action.
The Mustangs have six wrestlers who will start Day 2 with a semifinals match: Victor Olmos (128), Paul Fox (134), Aaron Gonzalez (134), Niko Villarreal (140), Willie Fox (147) and heavyweight Jose Lara. Jesse Vasquez (108), Victor Daza (115), Matthew Penyacsek (154) and Juan Carbajal (162), suffered one loss Friday but are all still alive in the consolation bracket. Lupe Jimenez (154) and Mark Penyacsek (162) are also still in the tournament for Gilroy’s ‘B’ team.
Christopher High is currently 17th out of the 74-school field. No. 1-seed Jimmie Lopez (108) is in the semifinals as is heavyweight Stevie White. Ricardo Bribiescas (1340 and John Riffle lost their quarterfinals matches and will begin Day 2 in the consolation bracket.
