Ceremony struggles
“Hi Red Phone, I’m calling in regards to the Wednesday edition (April 26) on the Christmas Hill Park for graduation. I just want to say that last year I was parent of a graduate of the high school and of the junior high, and yes, I’m glad they didn’t hold it at the high school, however it was miserable at Christmas Hill Park. It was the worst graduation ever. We had relatives come from out of town and the older great-grandparents couldn’t even go up there, it was so muddy and they couldn’t walk up the hill. They really need to think about accommodations for older relatives and handicapped. Christmas Hill is just awful to hold it in, it’s not the right place. The city really needs to think getting an appropriate place for graduation. Thank you and have a great day!”

Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately, for those of you who really wanted a new venue this year, it’s not going to happen. Just a week or so ago, Red Phone checked with the school district and officials said the middle school graduation will once again be held at Christmas Hill Park.

Offer a monument, not a school
“Hello, first I’d like to say that I truly enjoy the pictures on page two, they’re very pleasing, I should send some in too.
“Second thing is that I just saw that they want to name the new school after that young man that died in Bush’s boondoggle. There are many young men who have died in various wars, that came from this area. They deserve monuments, they deserve praise, they deserve tombstones, but no, that does not warrant naming a school after them. There are too many young men and women that have done the same. … I admire the young man, and I admire his democracy, but naming a school, no. That’s just not right. Thank you.”

Just to clear it up, good caller, the school district has not yet made any decisions regarding naming the school that will replace Las Animas Elementary. The district is currently assembling a committee to name the school and once the committee is established, people may submit any name for consideration, along with the significance of that person. And, the Red Phone does like your idea regarding a memorial for all local sons and daughters killed in wars.
Legal vs. illegal
“I just wanted to call about all the recent immigration protests. You’ve been really good at covering the issue. But one story I read, someone mentioned that they are illegals, not criminals. Hello? What do you think illegal means? The minute people come into this great country illegally, you are committing a crime. I kind of fall in the middle of the issue, but that was really a stupid comment. People need to think about what they’re saying before they say it. Thanks, Red Phone.”
