With a little less than a month left before the Central Coast Section Championships are held at her very own track, Gilroy High’s Kathleen Miller is on pace to break her own school record in the 3200 meters.

Competing at the CCS Top 8 Track and Field Classic at Los Gatos High School Friday, along with several other GHS track and field athletes, Miller took fifth place in the two-mile race with a time of 11 minutes, 21.3 seconds. The mark is the second fastest in school history, second only to Miller’s 7th place showing at CCS last year when she came across the finish line in 11:11.29.

“Kathleen’s mark was a surprise so we’re excited that she’s really ahead of schedule,” Gilroy coach Jeff Myers said.

Another Mustang who came close to finishing at the top was Peter Guenther, who competed in four events on the day and came in third in the 100 meters with a time of 11.26. The mark was a personal record for Guenther, who also competed in the 110 High Hurdles (6th, 15.58 seconds), 300 Intermediate Hurdles (8th, 41.59) and the 4×100 relay team (6th, 43.93 seconds).

Guenther, Steven Heisey, Travis Reyes and Nick Rodriguez crossed the line in the 4×100 in a photo-finish with fifth place Riordan, which was given fifth despite having the same time as the Mustangs. Serra finished in first with a time of 42.92.

The mark was a personal record for the Gilroy foursome, and indicates the Mustangs will be a dangerous relay team in the weeks ahead.

“To be that close to the private schools … bodes well for them,” Myers said.
