Dear Editor,
The South County Democratic Club is proud to announce the endorsement of Dr. Peter Arellano and Charles Morales in the upcoming Gilroy City Council election. In a well-attended meeting on Aug. 20, Arellano and Morales were subject to detailed questions and answers. Club members concluded that these two candidates best represent Democratic Party ideals. Members are now being encouraged to assist them in their campaigns.
The South County Democratic Club has endorsed candidates in both partisan and non-partisan elections for the last eight years. It is important to note that just being a Democrat has not always resulted in a club endorsement.
In last year’s Morgan Hill mayoral race, two registered Democrats were running and neither was able to garner enough support for an endorsement. Also in a prior Morgan Hill City Council race, Hedy Chang (a popular Republican) was supported by enough members that only one Democrat received an endorsement for two openings.
There are many other qualifications other than party affiliation that make a good City Council representative. Local leaders must act on many issues that are not reflected in partisan politics. For that reason your readers will need to assess the full background of the five declared candidates. Our club members are still making independent determinations as to who should receive their vote, especially since there are three openings in the race.
That said, Charles Morales and Peter Arellano demonstrated that they were clearly apart in from the other candidates and deserving of our endorsement. Both have represented the City of Gilroy with excellent records of public service.
They are also clearly running independent campaigns with the support of many Republicans and independents.
At the same meeting the South County Democratic Club also created the Youth Service Recognition Awards. There will be special presentations made to several deserving young people at an annual event, the first of which will be on Sept. 17.
