The Morgan Hill Police Department plans to kick off Independence Day weekend with a DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the city limits of Morgan Hill between the hours of 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. Friday night.
People caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, court probation and other expenses that can exceed $10,000, according to a press release from Sheriff Sgt. Jose Cardoza.
With all the barbecues and fireworks shows going on the weekend before Independence Day, people tend to be more likely to hop behind the wheel after having a few drinks than they would be on a typical weekend. Last year, there were 179 DUI arrests in Santa Clara County alone, according to date from California Avoid, an DUI prevention organization.Â
