GILROY – Gilroy Automotive finished its tear in the boys majors division of Gilroy Little League like it started – on top.

The motor bunch edged Fritter & Shultz in Thursday’s championship game by a slim 5-4 margin to finish with a 16-3 overall record and advance to the TLC’s in Watsonville, beginning Sunday.

Pitcher Eric Vegas was money on the hill, going six strong innings with five strike-outs against a power-hitting Fritter & Shultz line-up, and at the plate, highlighting his two-hit game with a two-run triple.

Kyle Stannard, who also had two hits and one run-batted-in, flashed his steady glove all game long, making 10 of the 18 outs including two double-plays. Peter Palma scored twice and Andrew Benjamin doubled to help lead Gilroy Automotive to the championship.

Fritter & Shulz’s offense was led by Jose Gamboa and Jacob Gonzalez, while the pitching was led by Jacob Gonzalez and Juan Delgado.

The boys majors champions also received strong efforts from catcher Chris Martinez, Kenneth Urbanski, third baseman Andrew Benjamin, and centerfielder Nic Colman.
