The Gilroy boys cross country team split a triangular meet Monday, defeating Salinas 21-35, and losing to Alisal 22-35 at Navidad Park.
Alisal junior speedster Diego Estrada was the overall winner. GHS sophomore Jaime Reyes finished third overall in 17:12, followed closely by freshman Juan Velasquez, 17:13, and Derek Pesta, 17:31. A bigger obstacle for the Mustangs than the opposition was navigating a new course that was not especially well marked.
The GHS girls dropped a 27-30 decision to Alisal and fell 20-38 to Salinas. Cowboys runners Shannon McVannel and Alex Bell were the top-two finishers.
For the Mustangs, sophomore Kathleen Miller ran strong, however, placing fifth overall in 19:51. Paty Hernandez followed in 20:23, with Christine Bobula, 22:45, and Brandie Rodriguez, 22:46, also placing for Gilroy.
“We didn’t run exceptionally well, but under the circumstances with some of our runners trying to figure out where they had to run, I thought they did the best they could in that situation,” Mustangs’ coach Art Silva said.
GHS hosts Notre Dame and Palma next Monday at Christmas Hill Park.
