Mustangs Pounded by Salinas, Can't Clinch Title

The Gilroy High gymnastics team won its match Monday, defeating Gunn 178.95-111.95.

Kayla Loving Scott took first with 9.65 in bars and first on floor with 9.5 and second in the vault with 96.5 and second in beam with 9.0. Savanna Dalke took first in beam with 9.15 and second in bars with a 9.2. Shannon Hubbard had second on floor with 9.35.

Members of the JV swim team all were moved up to varsity level for their meet against Salinas on April 20. Alyssa Rothenburg took fifth place in both the 200 freestyle and the 50 freestyle. Janae Lance took fifth in the 200 individual medley, Christina Carrillo took fifth in the 100 freestyle, Ana Taylor-Collins took fifth in the 500 freestyle and Sarah McGeehen took fifth in the 100 backstroke.

The freshmen boys’ baseball team had a busy week. On Friday, the Mustangs hosted Palma and lost 6-3 to the Chieftains. Angel Gamboa pitched the first five innings, only walking two players, when the Mustangs were up 2-0. Neal Dinsmore and Gabriel Borilla then pitched the rest. The Chieftains went ahead 6-2 before Gilroy came up with one more run. The game ended with two players on base for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs dropped their next game to Salinas, 12-3. The boys picked themselves up to defeat Aptos, 5-4, Wednesday. Tyler Price pitched the last seven innings of the nine-inning game, allowing only two runs in the seventh. Nick Robles hit a double to score Nick Marra in the ninth.

On Thursday, the boys lost 5-3 in nine innings to visiting Santa Cruz. The game went into the eighth inning with the score tied 3-3, thanks to a squeeze play by Greg Hamik in the bottom of the 7th.

The JV volleyball team defeated Watsonville 25-20, 23-25, 15-6 to remain in second place in the Tri-County Athletic League. Gilroy’s only defeats have come to league-leading Monterey.

The girls freshman softball team dropped a 16-0 decision Tuesday to Notre Dame in a five-inning game in Salinas. After allowing 14 runs in the first two innings, the Mustangs settled down to hold the Spirits to two runs in the third and fourth innings.
