Grogan to Head Boys Volleyball Team
Gilroy – The Gilroy boys’ volleyball team will have a new head coach and yet one who is familiar to the players.
Sue Grogan, who served as assistant to Craig Martin the last two years during which the Mustangs finished second in the Tri-County Athletic League, has assumed the top spot. And she is hoping Martin will remain visible.
“For a guy with his limited background (in volleyball), Craig Martin did an amazing job,” Grogan said. “I hope he keeps his hand in it.”
Martin, however, said, “I am retired.”
Grogan, who has been head girls’ volleyball coach the last two years, acknowledges there are significant differences between the girls and boys.
“Boys volleyball is much more powerful,” Grogan said, “where the girls tend to be more finesse. I enjoy the crossover. It’s like the best of both worlds.”
Grogan said her assistants will be the same as they were for the girls — Melissa Noto, Karie Gonzalez and Antoinette Bowe.
Football Schedule is Out
The 2007 football schedule is out and there are two changes. Burlingame and Woodside, the first two games on the 2006 schedule, have been replaced by Mountain View and Pacific Grove. Also, there will be no Week 0 game and no week off during the season.
Gilroy opens Sept. 7 with Mountain View, a member of the De Anza League which qualified for the CCS playoffs, at Garcia-Elder Complex. The second game, Sept. 14 against Oak Grove, is also at home.
The Mustangs open their road schedule with a 2pm game Sept. 22 at Serra. That is the only Saturday matinee game on the schedule. GHS opens its TCAL schedule the following Friday at Salinas.
Alvarez comes to GHS on Oct. 5. The next two games are on the road – Oct. 12 at Pacific Grove and Oct. 19 at Alisal. Two home games follow – Palma and North Salinas. The Mustangs conclude Nov. 9 at San Benito.
Estorga Returns to Gilroy
A familiar face is back at Gilroy this weekend for the Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament. Scotts Valley first-year head coach Abrem Estorga is a GHS alum, class of 1994. The Falcons won their first five games this season under Estorga.
While Scotts Valley was eliminated after dropping its first two games to Harbor and Aptos, it is apparent Estorga has the Falcons headed in the right direction. One year ago when Estorga was an assistant coach for the Monte Vista Christian girls, Scotts Valley was 0-21. Estorga was also previously an assistant coach at Gavilan College.
